Essay --
In Bram Stokerââ¬â¢s Dracula and Charlotte Bronteââ¬â¢s Jane Eyre both examine the thematic element of the role of women in society. In the Victorian Era, women were held to very narrow gender roles. While the era was in midst of a drastic change regarding gender equality, towards a 'modern' concept of equality, the process was not achieved (Marsh). A women's place during the Victorian Era was meant to be in the home as a wife and a mother (Abrams). Like today, a women could either be considered pure or impure. A pure women would be considered quiet, passive and loyal whereas an impure woman would be considered a disgrace and expendable (Appell). Both Jane Eyre and Dracula have many of these elements in the characters. In Bronte's novel Jane Eyre, Jane is considered the ultimate image of a Victorian Era women where Bertha is the impure woman. In Dracula, Mina is the image of a Victorian Era women, much like Jane. Lucy, on the other hand, is considered an impure character. Thr ough the main characters in Jane Eyre and Dracula, the ideas of what a Victorian women should be, and the idea of what a women should not be are shown. With the lead character in Bronte's novel Jane Eyre, there is the ultimate image of a Victorian Era women. Jane is considered to be a plain, quiet, passive, and simple minded woman; yet she is intelligent and sophisticated. "if she were a nice, pretty child, one might compassionate her forlornness; but one really cannot care for such a little toad as that" (Bronte 22). The novel begins with Jane as a rebellious young girl reading a book, and being punished. "You have no business to take our books; you are a dependant, mama says; you have no money; your father left you none; you ought to beg, and not to live here ... ...torian Era. Bram Stoker uses Mina and Lucy, like Charlotte Bronte uses Jane and Bertha, to show the Victorian Era belief about the roles of women in society. The social construct of the time involved women to be inferior to men in all areas of life, with the exception of being a mother. Through Mina and Jane, Bram Stoker and Charlotte Bronte show the ideal Victorian woman. Whereas Lucy and Bertha are shown as the opposite of ideal, and in the end die to show the restore of order. Both, Jane Eyre and Dracula, have the same aspects of what defines a Victorian Era woman. It is shown, through Dracula, women can fall from their place in society and unless there is a man to put them back there is no hope for return. Through the main characters in Jane Eyre and Dracula, the ideas of what a Victorian women should be, and the idea of what a women should not be are shown. Fruitless Love :: Dialogue Essays
Fruitless Love à à à à à à à I waited for Bob to head out for his three o'clock before I packed up my things and left the office. I didn't have to. Bob isn't my boss, he's just the guy who sits in the next cubicle. And it's not like he would have said anything, or even thought anything. It was just one of those days when I felt like leaving without anybody noticing. à à à à à à à à I smoked a whole cigarette walking from the office to the shuttle stop two blocks away. I walk slowly now, even when I feel like I'm rushing. The shuttle was parked at the stop when I got there. The driver had run inside the McDonald's to use the bathroom. I sat down on one of those sideways seats near the front and I smiled at the young woman sitting across from me. We sat there awkwardly facing each other for several minutes while the bus driver did his thing in the McDonald's. I had a newspaper in my briefcase. à à à à à à à à It was a quarter to four when I got home and for a good five-some minutes I stood at the dining room table trying to decide what to do next. Laura would be home in an hour or so. That's why I took off early. To have an hour or so. But I wasn't sure what to do with it. I took a beer from the fridge and started a bath. à à à à à à à à I was still in a towel, shaving, when Laura came home. I heard her call my name down the hallway. She was winded. I heard packages. ââ¬Å"I'm in here,â⬠I said. My voice sounded funny, high. I drew the razor up toward my chin. à à à à à à à à ââ¬Å"Are we late?â⬠she asked. ââ¬Å"I had to stop at the supermarket first. I got us a cake to bring.â⬠à à à à à à à à ââ¬Å"Renee said not to bring anything.â⬠à à à à à à à à She walked into the bedroom, struggling to undo her top. ââ¬Å"Are we late? I didn't even see what time it is.â⬠à à à à à à à à ââ¬Å"What kind of cake?â⬠I asked. à à à à à à à à ââ¬Å"Did she call? I left a message on her machine. I said we might be late.â⬠à à à à à à à à ââ¬Å"We're fine,â⬠I said. à à à à à à à à I rinsed my face and leaned in close to the mirror to see if I'd missed anything. I couldn't remember if I'd brushed my teeth. Laura walked up behind me. She reached around and pinched one of my nipples. ââ¬Å"Hello, you,â⬠she said.

Review of literature on vision, personal and organisation Essay
A vision answers the question ââ¬Å"What do we want to become?â⬠It calls for the skills, talents, and resources to make future happen. A vision is different from a mission, goal or objective as it must have a clear and compelling imaginary way that offers an innovative way to improve ourselves. Simply stated, a vision is a realistic, credible, attractive, and it inspires oneââ¬â¢s future. Walt Disney for example understood the meaning of vision, he knew that dreams are wishes the heart makes and if one can dream it, one can make it happen (Nanus & Dobbs 1999). Each person must have their own personal vision in their life, as an example, one would dream to be the first female pilot in Malaysian Airlines but that dream will not come true because at the moment Malaysian Airlines is not prepared to employ a female as one of their pilots. They are not ready to change their traditional mind that pilots are meant for males. Their commercial advertisements reflect this attitude; it showed from the beginning of their operation their pilots have all been males. For that reason, if people want to realise their vision, they will need to relate or share it with the organisational vision. In a way, it gives people a sense of common ownership that enables them to cooperate with and support each other in pursuit of their common destiny (Nanus & Dobbs 1999). A shared vision authorizes and legitimates the activities of all who commit to it and act accordingly. It sanctions people, encouraging them to advance the common effort. As they do so, the vision also enables them to prioritize their efforts and improve their ability to serve their own needs and the needs of the organisation. As noted by Nanus and Dobbs (1999), there are several fundamentals where individual and organisational visions are linked. First, the organisation needs to verbalise with their employee where they (the organisation) are trying to take them; they must show the employee what they like to see this organisation hopes to become; and why it is important for the employee to move towards making his/her vision fulfil the organisationââ¬â¢s vision. Subsequently, the organisationââ¬â¢s vision and its passion must excite the employee and persuade the employee that by moving in towards the same direction, the employee will make a strong contribution and realise their own deepest needs for a sense of accomplishment, meaning and recognition in their own lives. Finally, if the organisation is willing to do all the above, and the employee find the vision firmly compelling and in accord with their own vision, they will commit to it and make it their own. Then they will see themselves not as the organisationââ¬â¢s followers but as colleagues and allies, working together on the same team with a common cause. Thus, when employees shape the vision of the organisation, it can reflect the personal visions that they have in their hearts and minds about their own futures (David 1998). Good personal and organisational visions are needed (Hills and Jones 1988), it creates a sense of direction and purpose for the individual as well as the organisation; it helps to drive decision making and resource allocation and finally to assess same significant improvement in the way they run their lives or the organisation. In addition, Nanus and Dobbs (1999) also indicated that personal and organisational visions provide focus, guiding decisions and actions, and enables them to filter the many issues competing for their time and attention. According to Nanus (1996), a shared vision between the individual and the organisation will result towards a long-term goal measurement, gradually accepting some major changes and has a more proactive planning style. In contrast, if the vision is not shared, it will only result in short-term goals with minimal resistance to change. However, a drawback for having individual and organisational visions linked together is either one of the entities must sacrifice their time or attention. For example, after 15 years of devoting myself working with a firm, I may think of retiring and start my own business within 3 years. However, in order to postpone my retirement and continue to serve the organisational vision, the company will now be required to top up my salary and entice me with all sorts of benefits which in my mind will compensate my desires for having my business. Having to say all that, many times we have heard some organisations failed to achieve their vision. This is true because a good vision will give a great impact towards the effectiveness of team and individual actions in the workplace. These few major points that I will elaborate later has proven the reasons that sometimes individual and organisational visions cannot be linked. As previously discussed, a vision is like making our dreams become a reality. In order to make it real, we must be prepared to accept changes and sacrifices, but not all are prepared to do that. We know that for organisational vision to be effective, it relies increasingly on employeesââ¬â¢ discretion to change and adapt. If they are not willing to accept changes in their life plan, then the end result will not be so great. Employees whose careers connect to their life plans are more effective at work (Gillen 1996). Another reason that makes the organisational vision ineffective is due to the visionââ¬â¢s vagueness. If the vision is so grandiose it becomes clearly unattainable and when the employees know that it is impossible to achieve the vision, they will no longer work towards it. Finally, the biggest challenge of organisational vision to be effective is to understand cultural diversity (Hellriegel, Jackson & Slocum 1999). For example, although diversity can enhance a teamââ¬â¢s ability to solve problems creatively because of different ways of looking at a problem and finding a solution; creativity may also heighten conflicts within a team causing more problems instead of providing solutions.

Brave New World â⬠Manufactured Happiness Essay
First of all, it is believed that one must suffer unhappiness to truly know and appreciate happiness. However, that concept is incompatible with a utopia, as the point of a utopia is to be without sadness, pain and suffering. In that respect, the World State is a utopia. Secondly, the concept of knowing unhappiness to know happiness is what we have in our society. Let me ask you: are you truly happy? Maybe you are, but what if I told you that that was not true happiness. What if I told you everything you experienced and know about being happy was just an illusion? Could you comprehend such a thing? The citizens of the World State have lived their whole lives with Soma, promiscuous sex, feelies, and mini golf, that is all they know. To them, what they have is true happiness because they have never experienced anything else. They cannot even comprehend a greater happiness because all the necessary elements such as love, hate and accomplishment have been removed. Happiness in the World State can be compared to Soma, as they get all the pleasures of the world without any side effects such as pain and sadness While they do not know the negatives of life to appreciate their happiness, they are still happy, to what they think is the highest degree. Thirdly, everyone in the World State is conditioned to have all the same wants. As a result of their conditioning, everyone is made to want all the same things, and in the World State, everyone gets what they want. At conditioning, they were taught to love things such as Soma, (Was and will make me ill,I take a gram and only am) so in a way, the people were manufactured for the product. That proves to be more effective; as the people become dependent and view Soma as their center of existence and no one desires for anything more then their next dose. People are told that their point in life is to love Soma, and sex and flying, so they never think of doing anything else. The pleasures of the World State become absolute, the result is, as they would say in the World State, everyone is happy now.

Business And Management Personal Statement Essay
Creativity is what drove me to pursue in Business and Management at University of Westminster. Business has always fascinated me. During my time growing up, I have seen the global economy change rapidly. The European Union has faced many atrocious crisis, making Europe unstable. As a result to prevent the instability, small businesses created jobs to improve the European Unionââ¬â¢s economy, and one day I want my business to be a part of that improvement. I came across a quote from Henry Ford, the founder of Ford Motor Company which stated ââ¬Å"A business that makes nothing but money is poor businessâ⬠Ford Motor Company is a hugely successful company which all probably started with creativity and ambition to actually create something that fulfils peoples need. This further encouraged me to produce a few ideas of my own. Two ideas in particular have stood out to me; firstly: Expand my current company. When I was in my last year in High school, I started my first youth enterprise with my classmate. We noticed that there was a huge request for thin jewelleries among young women. So we created a business plan and named our business Tropical Jewellery UF. Our company took great success and received a lot of positive response. My next idea for this company is to expand it internationally. I still want to develop the business and be as creative as I can, since I have put my whole in this idea. Secondly I have studied a lot about the global poverty. My main idea is to increase the education equivalent in countries who suffers from poverty by creating schools in these affecting areas. I know in particular that I will be facing difficulty whilst establishing the idea, however I will be fighting this struggle in order to create education. Through studying three different math courses, I have gained the ability to interpret data and successfully solve the task and draw conclusion from it. Beside studying math, I have also studied three business courses, marketing and a lot of other courses. I am a very well rounded person with skills and knowledge in many fields. I believe this is an important feature of a business person as they need to be able to deal with many different varieties of challenges. In and out of school I have a big interest in languages. I speak fluent Arabic and of course Swedish. I have studied Spanish for seven years, and I can almost speak it fluently. During my last year in school I studied a French course. I spent two weeks of my summer inà France. I continued to develop my French skills in Paris. During my third year, I studied Cambridge Advanced English and did the exam and got a certificate at the beginning of the summer. A business degree is exceptionally various and can lead to many opportu nities. At present I have recently entered the business world and I am already eager to learn more.
